Beyond words: using visual, sensory, creative and multimodal methods in qualitative research

This course, offered in English during the Winter term 2023/2024, aimed to familiarize students with different non-narrative research methods that can be used to elicit different stories, views, voices, identities, embodiments and experiences. It is hoped that these different methods will provoke new ways of thinking away from the Western canon, contribute to more democratic and equitable research settings, and open up possibilities for transforming social inequalities. VISION research probes some of these methods as a convivial and playful way of engaging research participants in envisioning their futures and reflecting upon their present and the past.

During the seminar the students were engaged in several practical exercises guided by the instructor and the invited guests. The final assignment encouraged students to work in teams to collect non-narrative data and prepare them for an exhibition that would focus on the methodological reflection. Thereby, the students were motivated to consider multimodal data and how to share them with a larger audience. Each team was free to use a method of their choice.

The exhibition took place on April 24th, 2024 in the ground floor of the Institute of Social Sciences. The data was chosen to the beginning of the summer term to enable participation of students and staff from the institute or the university who were not part of the course but were interested to learn about the visual, sensory, creative and multimodal methods.

The creativity and the depth of the methodological reflection of all the participating teams exceeded all the expectations. The photos taken during the exhibition document the amazing engagement and innovation of the students.
